What to look for
Any change in brain function after a mechanism — headache, dizziness, feeling slowed, confusion, "not right", even if brief. True post-traumatic amnesia is a red flag and needs urgent medical assessment.
Common mistake
Thinking "they were not knocked out, so it is not concussion."
Pitchside example
A polo player falls, gets back up, but reports a mild headache — that is enough to suspect concussion.
Key takeaway
No KO required. Any disturbance of brain function after mechanism = suspected concussion.
Mini check
Can concussion occur without loss of consciousness?
Terminology note: use RFU HEADCASE for rugby examples. For other sports, use the current UK grassroots concussion guidance plus the relevant governing-body pathway.
